Russia is on Fire! Since late July, wildfires have been burning in Central Russia and continue to be fueled by extreme temperatures. The Black Carbon emitted poses an enormous health risk to the residents of Moscow, to the point where the mortality has doubled in recent weeks. Even President Medvedev has acknowledged that the infernos are a result of global warming. Clickhere to read a Pacific Environment article about this situation in Russia. Western
Pacific Gray Whales in critical danger of extinction! The population of western gray whales has been driven to the
brink of extinction. Only about 130
western gray whales are left, including only 26
breeding females. They spend the summer off the coast of Sakhalin Island in the
Russian Far East, where the adults feed and where the mothers teach their
calves how to feed at the sea floor. Click here to read more.
In Russia, we protect the rich biodiversity and environmental treasures
of Siberia and the Russian Far East by supporting local organizations
and communities. Together with our partners we have shielded tens
of thousands of acres of old growth forest, won protections for
endangered species, and held oil, gas, and mining companies accountable to local communities.
Because local people know best how to protect their own environment, Pacific Environment provides funding to grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim, primarily in Siberia and the Russian Far East.
