Regions

The Pacific Rim is one of Earth's most  important regions, rich in biological and cultural diversity --boasting bountiful seas, vast forests, unique animals and verdant plant life.  From China north to Russia, then across the Bering Strait to Alaska, and finally south through the Pacific Northwest to California, the Pacific Ocean unites some of the world's oldest surviving cultures.

Pacific Environment works across the northern Pacific Rim to preserve the plants, animals and communities that represent the Pacific Rim's diversity of life — by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

The regions we work in:

Alaska
Alaska conjures images of vast open spaces, plentiful wildlife and abundant oceans. But America's last frontier—the crown jewel of our country's wild lands and marine habitats—faces profound environmental challenges.
Arctic
No place on Earth is changing more rapidly and drastically than the Arctic. Shared between Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States, the Arctic is a vast, ice-covered ocean that is surrounded by treeless, frozen land, which is often covered with snow and ice.
California
California is the largest energy market in the US, and one of the largest on the Pacific Rim. Because of its size and importance, California’s energy future has important ramifications beyond our borders. Equally important is the state's coastline. Together with the Channel Islands Sanctuary near Santa Barbara, and dozens of State Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), California’s coast provides vital feeding and migratory areas for endangered whales, and is also home to a rich biodiversity of marine life.
China
Over three decades of breakneck economic and industrial growth has severely strained China's environment: desertification is growing, urban air quality is among the worst in the world, water resources are being depleted and key habitats are being swallowed by development. And, the impacts of China's growth are being felt around the globe
Russia
Siberia and the Russian Far East are home to some of the most profoundly beautiful and globally significant wilderness areas left on earth. Russia is home to one-fifth of the world's forests, and endangered species such as the Amur leopard, Siberian tiger, and western Pacific gray whale call the region home. The immense social, economic, and political upheaval Russia has experienced over the last two decades have put a tremendous strain on the environment.
Global
As part of Pacific Environment's broader mission, our global work promotes environmentally and socially sustainable policies and practices among public and private finance institutions. With a principal focus on energy and the extractive sector (renewable energy, oil, gas, mining, and forestry) operating on the Pacific Rim, Pacific Environment persuades these finance institutions to be more open, accountable, and responsive to citizens’ concerns, particularly in project-affected communities.
