Results from the Lach Photo Contest
On 16 November 2009 a panel of Kamchatkan activists from the Lach Ethno-Ecological Information Center awarded first, second, and third prizes in a photography contest held during this summer’s salmon spawning season. The panel selected 34 finalists from 70 entries addressing the topic “The salmon in the life of the native peoples of Kamchatka” before whittling the group down to three winners. The top three submissions are displayed after the jump. All 34 finalists can be viewed here.

Andrei Karpenko First Place

Oleg Zaporotsky Second Place

Aleksei Zhirkov Third Place
The jury recommended all three winning photos for publication in a Russian magazine for fishing industry employees, and for display at an upcoming photography exhibition entitled “Man in the Wild,” which will take place in December at a shopping plaza on Kamchatka.
The competition aimed to promote salmon conservation by drawing local attention to the role of salmon in native societies. Funding was provided as part of a small grants initiative for native societies active in conservation. The program is administered by Lach with Pacific Environment aid.
