Alaska

We have continued to work with partners in Alaska Native communities to increase scrutiny of offshore drilling plans and their impacts to marine mammals.

• We and community partners won a major litigation victory which enjoined Shell's offshore drilling plans in the Beaufort Sea. This has allowed time for the collection of more data on impacts to the endangered bowhead whale population -- a staple in the subsistence lifestyle of Inupiat communities.
• In 2009, we ensured that that the Arctic Marine Shipping Assessment contained a section dedicated to evaluating the ecological impacts to marine mammals from noise seismic testing and shipping.
