Oil & Gas

In addition, California is not immune from the threat of oil spills, as the Cosco Busan and the Dubai Star oil spills in northern California demonstrated. Coupled with routine fuel transfers at California ports, accidental oil spills put several coastal communities and ecosystems at risk. Additionally, offshore oil platforms still exist in southern California. In 1969, one of the largest oil spills in US waters occurred in the Santa Barbara Channel, caused by a blowout on an offshore platform. Fast-forward to the Deepwater Horizon Gulf disaster of 2010, and it is clear that we must prevent such an incident from happening on the west coast.

We work with lawmakers and stakeholders such as the Office of Spill and Prevention and Response (OSPR) and the U.S. Coast Guard to make certain that California has the strongest oil spill prevention and response laws.
