Each year, the Goldman Environmental Prize is awarded to six incredible people working to make our world a better place. The 2011 Goldman Prize recipients tackled some of the most pressing environmental issues of the day through grassroots efforts, helping to educate and motivate local communities to get involved in the effort to protect the natural environment around them and to stand up for their rights. This year's winners are: Germany – Ursula Sladek, Zimbabwe - Raoul du Toit, USA – Hilton Kelley, El Salvador – Francisco Pineda, Indonesia – Prigi Arisandi and Russia – Dmitry Lisitsyn.
Pacific Environment nominated Dmitry Lisitysn for his courageous work to protect one of Russia’s most critically endangered ecosystems from large-scale petroleum development, located on Sakhalin Island, Russia. Pacific Environment has supported Dmitry’s organization for nearly two decades. Lisitsyn is the director of the Russian environmental watchdog Sakhalin Environment Watch (SEW), and is profiled in the film.
